In 2007, Melissa and Roger decided to finally start on the remodel of the front house (or "double-wide" as it is often affectionately called). This remodel calls for adding a great room of 884 square feet with a new kitchen. The interior of the house also gets a make over by taking one of the bedrooms and making a master bath and closet and adding a new bedroom (Roger's home office) where the current dining room is located, relocating the laundry to the old kitchen area, and relocating the front door to make a more pleasing entry. The room addition in the plan below is the room to the top of the building.
This page covers the clearing of the land, trench digging and pouring of the
foundation (March-April, 2007).
Update: Rough plumbing inspection prior to foundation pour. First concrete pour.
Getting ready to add radiant floor heater piping before final slab pour.
Final update: Radiant floor piping in and final slab poured.

Framing went pretty quick. Built 2 walls starting Friday night and then on
Saturday we called all our friends to raise them. Built the final wall on
Monday.

We have a center 2"x12"x24' center beam and we are hanging 2"x12"x16' roof
rafters off it. This took a bit of calculations to get everything correct. An
additional 2"x12" beam gets spliced to this to carry into the old roof.

Well it has been a while since I posted progress pictures. It's the first of
July and the wall and roof sheeting is all done. We are calling for framing and
sheeting inspection tomorrow. The windows and doors will go in tomorrow night.
Good thing it doesn't rain here in Northern California in the summer. I have a
three foot hole in the old house roof in preparation for the new air
conditioning unit. The old heat pump was removed at the start of the project
since the foundation went right where it was located.

Shingling - Complete
We figured it would be best to get the roof done next. Ever shingle a roof in
100 degree heat? Don't try it. We had the shingles delivered to the roof (good
idea!) The weather cranked up to the high 90s and low 100s. This meant that you
could only shingle until about 9:30am when the shingles became too soft to walk
on. We often got up at 5:45AM and were on the roof by 6. I don't think my
neighbors like me any more. We had a slight detour when we built a new awning
over the front door. Funny, I don't remember that on the original plans. I guess
that is what change orders are for. Since we moved the front door, we had to
comply with an height requirement that the old awning would not meet. So we cut
a hole in the old awning and built a new structure over the door. It makes the
entry way look a little more dramatic. On Saturday (Aug 4) Melissa and I found
the shingle we had been looking for.... (the last one!) That was 102 bundles of
shingles. It is nice to have this nasty job done.

Parlor This used to be the living room but we turned it into a nice parlor/library/den.
Entryway In order to improve the look when one enters the house, we took one of the windows out of the kitchen and made a new front door/entryway. We designed it to showcase some of Roger's photography.
